Welcome to my little world of photography! I am Darren Gritton, the photographer behind Darren Gritton Photography. To help you understand my creative philosophy I want to share with you a little about me and my journey from enthusiastic amateur to passionate professional photographer.
From as far back as I can remember, I’ve owned some sort of camera to feed my strong desire to document my own life journey and its landmark events. Photography has always given me a means of escape from daily life to a therapeutic world where I can hone my artistic skills. I started taking photos as a hobby, just snapping away on people, landscapes and close-ups. The more I learned basic photography techniques, the more addicted I became.
For me it’s light that makes photos come to life. I find myself continually hunting and capturing different light with my ever-present camera. It's a way for me to explore the world around me and then to investigate new editing styles, pushing the limits of my creativity and testing the boundaries of what’s achievable in photography. I feel very fortunate to live in the beautiful county of Sussex which is a stunning natural model and never fails to inspire me, whether I’m on the coast in Brighton or Shoreham or in the outstanding West Sussex countryside I call home.
I never set out to make photography a career, rather I like to think it chose me. As my photos became more accomplished and I began to entertain the idea of becoming a professional photographer, I enrolled in formal courses and obtained a Diploma in Wedding and Portrait Photographer and also gained City & Guilds Level 3 qualification Working with Digital Images. I was also lucky enough to have a wonderful personal mentor who, with his in-depth knowledge of indoor lighting, taught me valuable techniques in studio portrait photography. With his guidance, I learned the value of experimenting and working at a shot until I’ve achieved the desired results; I also aspire to his fun and whimsical approach to portrait photography in my work.
I love taking wedding photos and portraits of families and children; it’s a pleasure working with people and capturing key moments in their lives. I get real satisfaction seeing the look on people’s faces when the photos I’ve taken have captured their emotions, whether it’s the joy and anticipation of a new baby, the couple's laughter and excitement of a child’s birthday party or a relaxed family portrait which brings out individual personalities.
Although I became profoundly deaf at the age of just eighteen months old, I had a cochlear implant at the age of nine. I have a very good speech, communicate well and can use British Sign Language. My disability does not hold me back. I was raised in the West Sussex village of Lancing where I continue to live today with my fiancée Victoria and her two boys, Sam and Jesse and my daughter Lucy. They are the centre of my world and I'd go insane without them. Outside of photography, I’m equally passionate about film and music. Storytelling, creative innovation, and visual voodoo - no matter the medium - make my heart go thump thump. My life's goal to be as creative as possible in all my endeavours, to make you feel comfortable, beautiful and cared about. I love relationships and friendships more than I love photography. My hope is that relationships are built, friends are made and memories are captured at the end of the day. I can find humour in anything. I believe deeply in teamwork, community, and collaboration. Let's be friends.
I really look forward to hearing more about your wedding and sharing my work with you. To check your date is available, please get in touch! I'd love to hear all about your big day!
